Desiccant dehumidifiers are ideal for removing unwanted and excess moisture in unheated areas. Where the average temperature is 10°C and below, they prove more efficient and effective than compressor dehumidifiers. You can use them for boats, caravans, holiday homes, sheds, garages, storage areas, basements, and other challenging, cold areas.
A desiccant machine can be far smaller and more compact than a compressor dehumidifer with the same extraction rate, due to the design of the technology. They are highly robust and they are capable of removing huge amounts of moisture from ambient air. However, these machines do consume a lot of energy, and they are more expensive to run than traditional refrigerant dehumidifiers. That said, they do produce more heat, so they may offset any need for an additional heater if you are dehumidifying a cold space that you also want to warm.
Generally, these absoption dehumidifiers are best for commercial and industrial drying because of the running costs involved and their working temperatures. As they work most efficiently in very temperatures where refrigerant units cannot, it is unlikely you would use one in a populated room. But, they are ideal for unoccupied spaces.

These dehumidifiers have a reticulated mesh of absorbent (desiccant) material called Zeolite on a rotary wheel. Fans draw ambient air in from a space as the desiccant wheel rotates and collects moisture. Then, as the wheel turns, dry air is heated, and separate fans blow it back into the area. Meanwhile, the moisture expels separately from an exhaust. The exhaust can lead somewhere outside of the space, a water tank, or a continuous drainage system.
