The compressor uses refrigerant to cool the coils while moist air from within the space is drawn into the machine by the fan. When the moist air hits the cold coils, the moisture in the air condenses on to the coils and drips down into an internal water collection tank - or is fed out of the machine via a hose - depending on the model.
