Destratification fans are used to cut thermal stratification, which is the natural layering of warm air and cool air that forms within a space. Stratification refers to the way in which warm air rises whilst cooler, denser air sinks. This is more noticable in areas with high ceilings, where warm air can rise to a degree where its effects aren't felt by the room's occupants.
A destratification fan helps to recirculate the hot air at the top of this layering, mixing it with the cooler air below. This helps to maintain a comfortable temperature within the room and also reduces the energy needed to keep a room warm.
Significant energy wastage occurs when unoccupied areas of the building are heated - often roof spaces and large rooms. The Carbon Trust estimates that these fans can reduce energy consumption by as much as 20%.
